Video to Text Privacy Policy
Last updated: October 17, 2026
This policy explains what happens to your data when you use the Video to Text Chrome extension ("the extension", "we", "us"). In short: your video stays on your computer, only its audio is sent for transcription, we don't keep your audio or transcripts, and we don't collect personal information.
1. What happens to your video
- Your video never leaves your device. The extension extracts the audio track locally in your browser and splits it into short parts.
- Only the audio is sent to our transcription API, which runs on Cloudflare Workers. Our API forwards each part to one speech-to-text provider (see section 4) and returns the text to you.
- We do not store audio or transcripts on our servers. They exist only in memory while a request is being processed.
2. What is stored in your browser
The following stays in your browser's local extension storage and is never sent to us:
- The audio parts and text of your current transcription, so the job can continue if you close the popup. They are removed when you start a new transcription.
- Your own Groq API key, if you choose to add one. It is sent only to Groq (api.groq.com) to transcribe your audio, and you can remove it at any time from the extension's start screen.
- Local usage counters (for example, how many transcriptions you have made), used to decide when to ask for a review.
3. Anonymous usage analytics
To understand how the extension is used and to fix errors, it sends anonymous events to our database (hosted on Supabase):
- A random installation ID generated by the extension (not linked to your name, email or Google account)
- Events such as "popup opened", "transcription finished" or "error", with the error message, the transcription provider used and how long it took
- Extension version, browser language and operating system type
We do not collect file names, audio, transcripts, browsing history, or any information that identifies you personally.
4. Third-party services
Audio is processed by one of the following providers. We try them in order and use the first one that is available:
- Groq (privacy policy)
- Cloudflare Workers AI (privacy policy)
- AssemblyAI (privacy policy). We ask AssemblyAI to delete each transcript right after it is returned.
- Deepgram (privacy policy). We opt out of Deepgram's model improvement program.
Our API runs on Cloudflare, and analytics are stored on Supabase. We do not use your audio or transcripts to train AI models, and we do not sell or share your data for advertising.
5. Fair use limits
The free service has a daily limit. To enforce it, our API counts requests per installation ID and per IP address. IP addresses are stored only as a one-way hash, never in readable form, and the counters reset every day. Our servers keep short-lived technical logs (such as error messages, never audio or transcripts) to keep the service running.
6. Security
- All data is sent over encrypted HTTPS connections.
- Our provider API keys are stored on the server and never shipped in the extension.
7. Your choices
- You decide which videos to transcribe and when.
- You can remove your Groq API key at any time.
- You can uninstall the extension at any time from Chrome's extensions page. This deletes all data the extension stored in your browser.
8. Children's privacy
The extension is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect information from them. If you believe a child has provided us with information, contact us and we will delete it.
9. International processing
Our API and providers operate globally, so your audio may be processed on servers in different countries. The same protections described here apply wherever it is processed.
10. Legal basis (GDPR)
For users in the European Economic Area and the UK, we process audio to perform the service you request, and anonymous analytics and abuse prevention on the basis of our legitimate interest in keeping the service working and free.
11. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top and publish the new version at this address. For significant changes, we may also let you know in the extension.
